OPINOGÓRA: On May 2, 2025, organizers invite you to Sigismund’s Name Day.An attractive event is being prepared during May Day at the Museum of Romanticism in Opinogóra.

Zygmunt is a male name and surname of Germanic origin. It is derived from the German forename and surname Siegmund derived from the words: „sigu” meaning „victory” and „mund” or „munt”, „protection”, „shield”. It can therefore be translated as „defense by victory.” The organizers of the literary event „Siegmund’s Name Day” are, of course, not referring to some nameless Siegmund, but to Count Napoleon Stanislaw Adam Felix Zygmunt Krasinski.

Who was Count Sigismund Krasinski?

Count Napoleon Stanislaw Adam Felix Zygmunt Krasinski – poet, playwright and novelist. One of the trinity of bards (next to Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Słowacki), the greatest poets of Polish Romanticism. II Ordynat na Opinogórze. (born February 19, 1812 in Paris, died February 23, 1859 there)

Count Zygmunt Krasinski made his debut in 1828 as the author of Gothic tales imbued with the macabre. Already then, the most characteristic features of Zygmunt Krasinski’s writing became apparent: his obsession with suffering, annihilation and death[, and, at the same time, the internal conflict between life’s convention and the ethos of the Romantic national liberation struggle. As a result, they yielded a bountiful harvest of literary works full of frenetic images of hell and sharp dissonances on religious and social issues. Later – around 1847, with the publication of „The Last” – the bard replaced the extreme despair of his previous works with a message of Christian ethics, which in time, supplemented by messianic thought, turned into fervent calls for evangelical love. Among the most outstanding works of Zygmunt Krasinski are the dramas „Nie-boska komedia” and „Irydion”.
