Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński, MD, PhD, DSc, MSc, from the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing in Poland, has been appointed to the American Otological Society. This took place during the 159th Annual Meeting of the American Otological Society, held in Phoenix, Arizona, in the United States of America. Piotr H. Skarżyński is the second Pole in history to become a member of this organisation.

Requirements and Criteria for AOS Membership
Applications for membership of the American Otological Society (AOS) are accepted each year until 1 September. Candidates must meet specific requirements, including carrying out their patient-care duties with professionalism, integrity and high ethical standards. They should demonstrate outstanding achievements in acquiring new and significant knowledge in the field of otology, clinical excellence, and active involvement in other otological organisations and societies.
The assessment also covers aspects such as the candidate’s impact, innovation and quality of contribution to the development of otology, generation of new knowledge, mentoring and excellence in teaching, leadership role, and contribution to the fulfilment of the goals of the AOS.

Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński has joined an elite group of 15 newly admitted members. The first Pole in history to be admitted to the American Otological Society was Prof. Henryk Skarżyński, MD, PhD, DSc, Dr h.c. multi.

Prof. Piotr Henryk Skarżyński, MD, PhD, DSc, MSc in Management, is a world-class specialist in otorhinolaryngology, paediatric otorhinolaryngology, audiology and phoniatrics, as well as public health. He serves as Director for Science and Development at the Institute of Sensory Organs and as Deputy Head of the Department of Teleaudiology and Screening at the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing.
Prof. Piotr Henryk Skarżyński holds positions on the boards and governing bodies of prestigious international scientific societies, including as a founding member of the World Hearing Forum at the World Health Organization, a board member and representative of the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth, and President of the International Advisory Board of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery for the 2024–2025 term.
His scientific activity is reflected in the implementation of dozens of national and international research projects. He is currently carrying out, and has carried out, numerous projects in the field of digitalisation and the use of artificial intelligence in the diagnostics of sensory organs. He has received more than 100 individual and team awards for his economic and implementation-related, scientific, clinical and teaching activities.
For years, Prof. Piotr Henryk Skarżyński has combined clinical, scientific and organisational work with intensive educational activity addressed directly to patients and their families. In an era of an ageing society, a growing number of children with auditory processing disorders and increasingly widespread exposure to noise, reliable knowledge about prevention and early diagnosis is of key importance.
