WARSAW: The Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Warsaw is organizing the inaugural Innovation Economics Workshop. The special guest of the event is Professor Tomasz Mickiewicz from Aston University in Birmingham.
Innovation remains a formidable challenge across Europe, with the continent trailing significantly behind global leaders. The initiative by the Faculty of Economic Sciences to address this issue is therefore both timely and commendable.

What Does Juliusz Bolek Say About European Innovation?
“Innovation is currently one of the most important areas of global competition,” says Juliusz Bolek, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Institute of Business. “Innovation leaders invest enormous amounts in R&D. One might assume that the level of investment determines outcomes. However, the truth is that innovation funding must be strategically allocated. In Europe, this often isn’t the case—resources are largely wasted despite being spent in compliance with regulations, and that’s not enough,” Bolek asserts.
Purpose of the First Innovation Economics Workshop
The workshop aims to integrate Polish economists specializing in innovation-related topics. The first edition of the event will include a keynote lecture by Prof. Tomasz Mickiewicz and feature academic sessions discussing the implementation and funding of innovation projects, data access, and publishing in international journals.
Topics Covered
Organized by Prof. Andrzej Cieślik and Dr. Krzysztof Szczygielski, the workshop will include presentations on: innovation in businesses, technology and knowledge transfer, the creation and development of tech startups, convergence and absorption of technology, links between innovation and international trade, and regional perspectives on innovation.
Event Details
The event will take place on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:18 p.m. at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, University of Warsaw, Długa Street 44/50, Warsaw.
Workshop Schedule Highlights
- Session I (10:10 a.m.): Topics include ESG strategies, tax incentives for green technologies, and the effectiveness of fiscal tools in supporting innovation.
- Session II (12:15 p.m.): Presentations on regional human capital, innovation gaps in Poland, spatial dynamics of innovation in Europe, and the role of clusters in global value chains.
- Keynote Address (2:15 p.m.): Prof. Tomasz Mickiewicz will present “The Political Economy of Innovation,” exploring how political systems influence innovation. While historically hostile to innovation, authoritarian regimes like China have recently emerged as major players. In contrast, democratic nations face challenges such as income inequality and the erosion of the middle class—issues that complicate equitable innovation development.
- Session III (3:45 p.m.): Discussions on patent activity in the UK, knowledge creation in European higher education institutions, digital economy disparities across the EU, and how management characteristics affect innovation in Polish industrial firms.
- Wrap-Up and Discussion (5:30 p.m.): A concluding panel on how and where to publish innovation research.
